קובץ hosts הוא קובץ של מערכת ההפעלה המאפשר לקשר בין כתובת IP (מספר) לכתובת שמית (מחרוזת). פניה לקובץ Hosts שנמצא במחשב המקומי נעשית לפני פניה לDNS שנמצא במערכת חיצונית.אחת ההמלצות על מנת להימנע מפגיעתן של תוכנות ריגול היא לחסום אתרים באמצעות קובץ ה־hosts, על ידי קישור בין כתובת האתר לבין הכתובת 127.0.0.1, שהיא למעשה כתובת המחשב המקומי. באופן זה נחסמים אתרים המכילים תוכנות הריגול, וכך נמנע מאלה לחדור למחשב בעת הגלישה.
מיקום הקובץ משתנה לפי מערכת ההפעלה.
